ABOUT

URUGUAY FILM FEST

This first rendering of URUGUAY FILM FEST, presented by King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, invites local audiences to explore recent films from Uruguay, created by new and established filmmakers alike, most of which have never been screened in New York. The weeklong fest is a space for interaction and dialogue with interested filmgoers outside of Uruguay’s borders. From more than fifty films viewed for the fest, close to twenty-five films (shorts, animated films, documentaries and features) produced in Uruguay will be screened.

We are pleased to welcome film director and producer Virginia Martínez to present her latest documentary Las manos en la tierra / Hands in the Earth (2010). Virginia is the director of the documentaries Por esos ojos (1998) Ácratas (2000), Memorias de mujeres (2005), and she is the current director of Uruguay National Television (TNU). Virginia will join us on opening night (Oct. 18th) for a discussion after the film about her documentaries and about contemporary audiovisual production in Uruguay.

We are also delighted to welcome producer Andrés Varela to present Mundialito (2010), the most recent Coral Films production. Andrés is the production director of the documentaries La Matinée (2007) and Cachila (2009), and co-founder (together with director Sebastián Bednarik) of Coral Films and of Efecto Cine, an annual traveling film exhibition in Uruguay. Andrés will join us on closing night (Oct. 24th) for a discussion after the film.

We look forward to seeing you throughout the week and we welcome your comments and responses to the films being screened.
